Electronic Cigarette Use May Reverse the Harm Resulting From Tobacco Smoking in COPD Patients, Even in the Long Term
A new study that was recently published in the International Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, led by Riccardo Polosa, MD, PhD (Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine of the University of Catania, Italy), suggests that electronic cigarette (EC) use may reverse some of the harm resulting from tobacco smoking in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Heart Foundation misinterprets results of vaping study
The Heart Foundation has misinterpreted the findings of a recent study which claims that daily vaping doubles the risk of having a heart attack. The Heart Foundation’s Chief Medical Adviser Professor Gary Jennings has claimed on radio that this study adds weight to the other evidence showing that e-cigarettes are harmful. In fact, the study shows no such thing. The flawed study was published today in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine by well known anti-vaping advocate, Stan Glantz. The media release accompanying the study can be found here.It is no... Read more...
The FDA must resist the irrational fear of vaping
A little over a year ago, Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb announced a fundamental shift in U.S. tobacco policy. While recognizing it's the nicotine that hooks smokers, Gottlieb made clear what public health professionals have known for decades but have failed to communicate to the public. It's the smoke, not the nicotine that leads to the deaths of more than 480,000 American smokers a year.Gottlieb's two-pronged approach, each dependent on the other, relies on reducing nicotine in cigarettes while ensuring a healthy marketplace for safer nicotine alternatives like e-cigarettes.... New Study Indicating That E-Cigs Are The Favored Smoking Cessation Aids
While the number of smokers in the US who are switching from smoking to vaping has declined over the last three years, this PATH study has indicated that e-cigarettes are still the most popular cessation tools. To conduct their research, Tarik Benmarhnia and colleagues looked at data from Waves 1 and 2 of the FDA-funded PATH Study to evaluate “the influence of [e-cigarettes] and pharmaceutical cessation aids [varenicline, bupropion and nicotine medicines, NRT] on persistent abstinence (=30 days) from cigarettes, and reduced cigarette consumption” between 2013 to 2015.“Our results indicate that... New Research Bolsters Case for E-Cigarettes
Gallup recently announced that American smoking rates have hit an a record low of 16 percent. Evidence suggests that e-cigarettes deserve some of the credit.Nearly half a million Americans die each year of cigarettes. That is nearly three times more than the combined number of suicide, overdose and alcohol deaths, whose rise have generated headlines and been attributed to the decline in U.S. life expectancy. Cigarette smoking causes about one in every five deaths in the United States. It’s estimated 1 billion people worldwide will die prematurely in the 21st... Read more...

HNB, Aldehydes and Subohming
Dr Konstantinos Farsalinos has produced another study in conjunction with colleague at the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Centre. This one compares the emissions from an IQOS heated tobacco product with the vape from an ecigarette and smoke from tobacco. While vaping is much safer than both, he has words of caution for subohmers.Their study concluded: “IQOS emitted far lower levels of potentially harmful carbonyl emissions than a combustible cigarette, but higher levels than an e-cigarette. Nicotine yield from the tobacco heated products tended to be lower than combustible cigarette and the... Read more...
Vaping helps even hardened smokers quit
Vaping helps people stop smoking—even when they don't want to, according to new research from the University of East Anglia.A study published today shows that smokers who switch to vaping may be better able to stay smoke-free in the long term. And that even people who didn't want to stop smoking, have eventually quit because they found vaping more enjoyable. Lead researcher Dr. Caitlin Notley from UEA's Norwich Medical School said: "E-cigarettes are at least 95 per cent less harmful than tobacco smoking, and they are now the most popular aid to... Experts back e-cigarettes
A small electronic device invented by a Chinese pharmacist in 2001 is now being viewed as the human race’s best hope to end smoking, while dividing healthcare professionals and disrupting the cigarette industry.Around 500 healthcare experts, researchers, academicians, consumers, vaping advocates, parliamentarians and even tobacco executives from 60 countries gathered together under one roof in Warsaw, Poland to push for the regulation of electronic cigarettes, heat-not-burn devices, Swedish snus and other low-risk non-combustible smokeless tobacco products that they say could save millions of smokers from premature death globally.“Vaping is 95-percent... The biological and clinical evidence that e-cigarettes are really bad for health are rapidly growing. Now, the first evidence linking e-cigarettes with chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) and laryngeal cancer is raising serious concerns about users of these products and has the public health community sending warning messages to everyone that not only there is no proof that e-cigarettes are less harmful than smoking but that they may very well be even more risky. Here is a case report proving the link between e-cigarettes and COPD as well as laryngeal cancer.... Dr Farsalinos comments on recent study on the presence of metals in e-liquids
"In these last few days, a study suggesting the presence of toxic levels of metals in e-liquids, has made headlines and was quoted by numerous articles. However, renowned anti-smoking expert Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos, pointed out that this is once again a case of misinterpreted data. The study titled Metal Concentrations in e-Cigarette Liquid and Aerosol Samples: The Contribution of Metallic Coils, was published in Environmental Health Perspectives. American Cancer Society changes its position on e-cigarettes
In a position statement released on it’s website, the ACS rightly pointed out that while smoking is responsible for the deaths of millions, current research keeps indicating that e-cigarettes are safer than regular cigarettes. The organization added that although it primarily recommends FDA-approved cessation aids, it recognizes that some smokers are not interested in trying these products to quit. Hence, these smokers should be redirected to switching to the safer alternatives.“Some smokers, despite firm clinician advice, will not attempt to quit smoking cigarettes and will not use FDA approved cessation... Stop Lying to Smokers about Safer Alternatives
Smokeless tobacco and vapor products are far less dangerous than cigarettes are, but the public-health elite won’t admit it. Last July, President Trump’s new FDA commissioner, Scott Gottlieb, announced new approaches to fighting smoking-related death and disease. While not perfect, these tactics represented a sharp break from the government’s previous “quit or die” stance on tobacco. Most important, Gottlieb granted relief to tens of thousands of businesses that sell “vaping” products, which deliver nicotine through an aerosol rather than tobacco smoke, by giving the makers of such products four extra... Dr. Farsalinos reproduces controversial formaldehyde study
"In January 2015, R. Paul Jensen and colleagues created global headlines with a defective e-cigarette experiment. They claimed in the New England Journal of Medicine that vapor contains “hidden” formaldehyde at far higher levels than in cigarettes. Their measurements required overheating or “dry-puffing” e-cigarette liquid, a process that produces such harsh (not hidden) oral sensations that the vapor is intolerable to normal consumers. As Churchill said, “A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.” The Jensen mischaracterization caused considerable damage, as...
