Short version: if you're moving up from a basic eGo battery or a fixed-output device, pick a variable wattage mod, set it at the low end of the range printed on your coil, and nudge it up until it tastes right. That's the whole skill. Adjusting voltage or wattage can seem more complicated than it needs to be; in reality, VV/VW mods are straightforward once you understand the basics, and they open up a lot more control over your vaping experience.
Voltage vs. wattage: what's the difference?
Variable Voltage (VV) lets you set the voltage delivered to your coil. The actual power (and heat) your coil produces depends on both the voltage and the coil's resistance, so the same voltage setting behaves differently on different coils.
Variable Wattage (VW) is simpler for most people. You set the power output directly in watts, and the device automatically adjusts voltage based on your coil's resistance. That means consistent performance regardless of which coil you're using.
For most vapers, variable wattage is the more practical choice. Set your wattage, fire, adjust up or down to taste. The ohm rating stamped on your coil is what the mod reads to do its math; if you want to understand that number, our guide to ohm meters and coil resistance explains it.
What vape wattage should you use?
Start at the lower end of your coil's recommended wattage range and work upward in small increments. You're looking for the point where flavor is full and vapor production is satisfying, without a hot or harsh hit. Most coils have a recommended range printed on the packaging or etched on the coil itself; that printed range always beats any general rule, including the one below.

Two signs you've gone too far: a hot, burnt-tasting hit (the wick can't keep up) or a noticeably shorter coil life. Two signs you're too low: thin flavor and a cool, weak draw. Fresh coils from our replacement coils collection will always list their range.
VV pens vs. VW box mods
You don't need a box mod to get adjustable power. A twist-dial pen like the Kanger EVOD Twist gives you variable voltage on a slim eGo battery, which is plenty for a clearomizer (see our beginner's guide to eGo-style vaping and which clearomizers still work with eGo batteries). A box mod adds a screen, true wattage control, more power, and the ability to run bigger sub-ohm tanks.

A word on safety
Stick to regulated mods like the ones above: they read the coil, cap the output, and refuse to fire a short. If your mod takes removable 18650 cells, use quality batteries with intact wraps and a dedicated charger, and never carry loose cells in a pocket. Frequently asked questions
What vape wattage should a beginner start at?
The low end of the range printed on your coil. Fire, taste, and step up a watt or two at a time until flavor is full and the hit isn't hot or harsh. If you're not sure, the middle of the printed range is a safe place to settle.
Is variable wattage better than variable voltage?
For most people, yes. With wattage you set the power you want and the mod adjusts the voltage for whatever coil is installed. With voltage, the power changes every time you change coil resistance, so you have to re-tune.
What happens if I set the wattage too high?
The coil overheats the wick faster than it can re-saturate, giving a hot, burnt-tasting hit and shortening coil life. Back the power down and let the coil sit for a minute before firing again.
Do I need external batteries for a mod?
Some mods have a built-in battery you charge over USB; others take removable 18650 cells sold separately. The product listing will say which. If you go removable, buy quality cells and a proper charger.
