If you want to know how to use a vape pen without a learning curve, the eGo-style setup is still the simplest answer: a slim pen battery, a small clearomizer tank that screws on top, a USB charger, and a bottle of e-liquid. Fill it, screw it together, press the button. Before pod kits, before box mods, before disposables, this format put vaping on the map, and at SmokTek we've carried the best of it since 2011. Here's everything you need to know.
What is an eGo setup?
An eGo setup has two parts: a battery and a clearomizer (tank). The battery is a slim, cylindrical pen-style device with a 510/eGo threaded connection. The clearomizer screws on top, holds your e-liquid, and turns it into vapor when you press the button. That's it.
The appeal is simplicity. No wattage settings to figure out, no coil building, no leaking pods. Just a clean, satisfying mouth-to-lung draw, very similar to the feel of a cigarette, which is why it remains one of the most straightforward setups for an adult smoker looking for a better smoking alternative. If you want the history behind this hardware, our guide to Kanger clearomizers from the ProTank era to the T3S covers it.
How to use a vape pen: the five-step setup
- Charge your battery fully before first use
- Fill your clearomizer, leaving a small air gap at the top. Don't overfill
- Let the coil sit for 5 minutes to fully saturate before your first puff
- Five clicks to unlock the battery, hold the button, and draw slowly
- Replace the coil when flavor starts to taste burnt or noticeably muted
That's the whole routine. The rest of this guide is about picking the right pieces.
The Kanger EVOD battery: the heart of the setup
The Kanger EVOD 1000mAh battery is the one that started it all for us. Clean design, solid build quality, 1000mAh capacity that gets most vapers comfortably through a full day, and single-button operation that anyone can learn in thirty seconds. Available in multiple colors, charged via USB, with a five-click safety lock. It's as foolproof as vaping gets.
The EVOD Twist: variable voltage for more control
If you want a little more control, the Kanger EVOD Twist adds variable voltage via a twist dial on the base. Turn it up for a warmer, fuller hit; turn it down for something cooler and smoother. It uses the same 510/eGo connection and works with all the same clearomizers. It's the EVOD with a tuning knob added. (Curious what the numbers mean? See our beginner's guide to variable voltage and wattage.)
We carry it in three capacities depending on how long you need it to last between charges:
- EVOD Twist 1000mAh: compact and light
- EVOD Twist 1300mAh: the sweet spot for most vapers
- EVOD Twist 1600mAh: all-day battery life, slightly larger
Just getting started? Try the EVOD kit
If you want everything in one box, the Kanger EVOD Blister Pack Kit includes a battery, an EVOD clearomizer, a USB charger, and a spare coil: everything you need to start right away. It's the cleanest entry point we carry and one of the best values in the store, ideal as a first setup or a reliable backup. You'll find it alongside our other beginner-friendly kits.
Choosing a clearomizer
We carry two Kanger clearomizers that work with any EVOD or 510/eGo battery. The EVOD tank is the classic starting point; the T3S is the step up if flavor is a priority. Both use replaceable coil heads, so you're never buying a new tank, just a fresh coil.
| Clearomizer | Best for | Coil heads | Coil life |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kanger EVOD | Classic starting point, around 1.5ml capacity, bottom-coil | ProTank/EVOD heads (5-pack) | Typically 1–2 weeks |
| Kanger T3S | Cleaner top-fill, purer flavor, several colors | T3S TOCC heads (5-pack), not interchangeable with EVOD | Typically 1–2 weeks |
Kanger EVOD Clearomizer
The Kanger EVOD Clearomizer is the natural companion to the EVOD battery. It holds around 1.5ml of e-liquid, uses a bottom-coil design for consistent wicking and flavor, and is straightforward to fill and maintain. When the flavor starts to fade or taste off, you simply swap the coil head.
It takes the widely available Kanger ProTank/EVOD replacement coil heads, sold in 5-packs. Coils typically last one to two weeks depending on how often you vape and which e-liquid you're using; sweetener-heavy liquids tend to shorten coil life. A burnt coil is one of the most common frustrations for new vapers, so keep spares from our replacement coils collection on hand.
Kanger T3S Clearomizer: the upgrade
The Kanger T3S is the more refined clearomizer in the lineup. Its top-fill design makes refilling cleaner and easier, with no dripping down the battery, and it uses Kanger's TOCC (Top Organic Cotton Coil) heads, which deliver noticeably purer flavor than standard coils. If flavor is your priority from day one, the T3S is where to start.
The T3S uses its own dedicated T3S TOCC coil heads, not interchangeable with the EVOD coils, so be sure to grab the right ones when restocking. Same replacement schedule: typically one to two weeks per coil.
Charging your EVOD
All EVOD batteries charge via the Kanger EVOD USB Charger, a compact charger that screws onto the 510 thread of the battery and plugs into any USB port or wall adapter. Charge time is typically 2–3 hours depending on capacity. The LED on the charger turns green when the battery is full.
Choosing your e-liquid
For eGo setups, a 50/50 or 60/40 VG/PG ratio works best. It wicks cleanly through bottom-coil clearomizers and delivers good flavor and throat hit without flooding the coil. Higher-VG liquids (70% or more) can be too thick for these tanks and lead to dry hits.
Our SmokEjuice premium natural e-liquid is Made in the U.S. in a range of flavors and nicotine strengths, and our DeKang e-liquid lineup offers classic tobacco and menthol profiles that pair particularly well with the MTL draw of eGo vaping. Browse the full e-liquid collection for more.
If you're switching from cigarettes, many adult vapers start at a higher nicotine level, 12mg or 18mg, and work down from there as they get comfortable. The eGo format is forgiving, and most people find their sweet spot quickly.
Frequently asked questions
How do I use a vape pen for the first time?
Charge the battery fully, fill the clearomizer without overfilling, wait five minutes for the coil to saturate, click the button five times to unlock, then hold it and draw slowly.
Which e-liquid works in an eGo clearomizer?
A 50/50 or 60/40 VG/PG ratio. Thicker high-VG liquids (70% or more) wick poorly in small bottom-coil tanks and cause dry hits.
How often should I change the coil in an eGo clearomizer?
Typically every one to two weeks, or as soon as flavor turns burnt or muted. Sweeter e-liquids shorten coil life.
Do Kanger EVOD coils fit the Kanger T3S?
No. The T3S takes its own TOCC coil heads; the EVOD takes ProTank/EVOD coil heads. Both are sold in 5-packs.
