Getting Started with eGo-Style Vaping: A Beginner's Guide
Before pod kits, before box mods, before disposables — there was the eGo vape pen. Simple, reliable, and genuinely effective at helping smokers make the switch, the eGo format put vaping on the map. At SmokTek we've been selling eGo-style gear since the beginning, and we still carry the best of it today.
If you're new to vaping, or you just want something straightforward that works without a learning curve, an eGo setup is hard to beat. Here's everything you need to know.
What Is an eGo Setup?
An eGo setup has two parts: a battery and a clearomizer (tank). The battery is a slim, cylindrical pen-style device with a 510/eGo threaded connection. The clearomizer screws on top, holds your e-liquid, and turns it into vapor when you press the button. That's it. Fill, screw together, and vape.
The appeal is simplicity. No wattage settings to figure out, no coil building, no leaking pods. Just a clean, satisfying mouth-to-lung draw — very similar to the feel of a cigarette — that makes it one of the easiest transitions a smoker can make.
The Kanger EVOD Battery — The Heart of the Setup
The Kanger EVOD 1000mAh battery is the one that started it all for us. Clean design, solid build quality, 1000mAh capacity that gets most vapers comfortably through a full day, and single-button operation that anyone can learn in thirty seconds. Available in multiple colors, charged via USB, five-click safety lock — it's as foolproof as vaping gets.
The EVOD Twist — Variable Voltage for More Control
If you want a little more control over your experience, the Kanger EVOD Twist adds variable voltage via a twist dial on the base. Turn it up for a warmer, fuller hit; turn it down for something cooler and smoother. It uses the same 510/eGo connection and works with all the same clearomizers — it's just the EVOD with a tuning knob added.
We carry it in three capacities depending on how long you need it to last between charges:
- EVOD Twist 1000mAh — compact and light
- EVOD Twist 1300mAh — the sweet spot for most vapers
- EVOD Twist 1600mAh — all-day battery life, slightly larger
Just Getting Started? Try the EVOD Kit
If you want everything in one box, the Kanger EVOD Blister Pack Kit includes a battery, an EVOD clearomizer, a USB charger, and a spare coil — everything you need to start vaping right away. It's the cleanest entry point we carry and one of the best values in the store. Ideal for someone just switching from cigarettes or looking for a reliable backup setup.
Choosing a Clearomizer
We carry two Kanger clearomizers that work with any EVOD or 510/eGo battery. The EVOD tank is the classic starting point; the T3S is the step up if flavor is a priority. Both use replaceable coil heads so you're never buying a new tank — just a fresh coil.
Kanger EVOD Clearomizer
The Kanger EVOD Clearomizer is the natural companion to the EVOD battery. It holds around 1.5ml of e-liquid, uses a bottom-coil design for consistent wicking and flavor, and is straightforward to fill and maintain. When the flavor starts to fade or taste off, you simply swap the coil head — no need to replace the whole tank.
It takes the widely available Kanger ProTank/EVOD replacement coil heads, sold in 5-packs. Coils typically last one to two weeks depending on how often you vape and which e-liquid you're using — sweetener-heavy liquids tend to shorten coil life.
Stock up on coil 5-packs so you're never caught short. A burnt coil is one of the most common frustrations for new vapers — having spares on hand makes the whole experience much smoother.
Kanger T3S Clearomizer — The Upgrade
The Kanger T3S is the more refined clearomizer in the lineup. It features a top-fill design that makes refilling significantly cleaner and easier — no dripping down the battery — and uses Kanger's TOCC (Top Organic Cotton Coil) heads, which deliver noticeably purer, cleaner flavor than standard coils. Available in several colors. If flavor is your priority from day one, the T3S is where to start.
The T3S uses its own dedicated T3S TOCC coil heads — not interchangeable with the EVOD coils — so be sure to grab the right ones when restocking. Same replacement schedule: typically one to two weeks per coil.
Charging Your EVOD
All EVOD batteries charge via the Kanger EVOD USB Charger — a compact passthrough charger that screws onto the 510 thread of the battery and plugs into any USB port or wall adapter. Charge time is typically 2–3 hours depending on capacity. The LED on the charger turns green when the battery is full.
Choosing Your E-Liquid
For eGo setups, a 50/50 or 60/40 VG/PG ratio works best — it wicks cleanly through bottom-coil clearomizers and delivers good flavor and throat hit without flooding the coil. Higher VG liquids (70% or more) can be too thick for these tanks and lead to dry hits.
Our SmokEjuice premium e-liquid is made in-house in a range of flavors and nicotine strengths, and our DeKang e-liquid lineup offers classic tobacco and menthol profiles that pair particularly well with the MTL draw style of eGo vaping.
If you're switching from cigarettes, start at a higher nicotine level — 12mg or 18mg — and work down from there as you get comfortable. The eGo format is forgiving and most people find their sweet spot quickly.
Quick Setup Summary
- Charge your battery fully before first use
- Fill your clearomizer — leave a small air gap at the top, don't overfill
- Let the coil sit for 5 minutes to fully saturate before your first puff
- Five clicks to unlock the battery, hold the button, and draw slowly
- Replace the coil when flavor starts to taste burnt or noticeably muted
