How Nicotine Absorption from Vaping Differs from Smoking
One of the most common frustrations new vapers experience is this: they switch from cigarettes to an e-cigarette, but it doesn't feel quite the same. The craving doesn't go away as quickly. They end up vaping more, or reaching back for a cigarette. What's going on?
Research by Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos published in Scientific Reports helps explain why.
The key finding
Cigarette smoke delivers nicotine to the bloodstream very quickly — nicotine levels spike within minutes of lighting up. E-cigarettes, by contrast, deliver nicotine more gradually. Even experienced vapers absorbed less nicotine per puff than smokers, and the absorption was slower.
What this means for new vapers
If you're switching from cigarettes, there are a few practical implications:
- You may need to vape more frequently at first — that's normal and doesn't mean it's not working
- Nicotine strength matters — starting too low is a common mistake; don't be afraid to use a higher-strength e-liquid initially and taper down
- Technique matters too — longer, slower draws tend to deliver more nicotine than quick puffs
- Give it time — most people find that after a week or two, the e-cigarette feels satisfying on its own
