Not Working? Here's the Fix Blinking lights, burnt taste, no hit and charging problems, solved in under five minutes.
For adults 21 and over. This guide makes no claim that any product is safe, safer than any other product, or a smoking cessation aid.
A brand new disposable vape not working is usually not a dead device. In most cases one of five things is going on. The battery shipped low, the device is locked or switched off, the airflow is blocked, the mode is set wrong, or the pod isn't seated. Every one of these takes under five minutes to fix.
This guide covers each symptom: blinking lights, burnt taste, no hit, auto-firing, and charging problems. It also covers the screen codes on the devices we sell most, including the Oxbar Nic Switch 35K, Geek Bar Pulse X 2, RAZ Vue and Foger Switch Pro. Last, it covers when to stop troubleshooting and replace the device.
One rule before anything else: never open, drill, refill or modify a disposable, and never try to get around its battery protection. Those fixes void any defect claim, and lithium batteries don't forgive mistakes.
Disposable vape not working: the short version
- No light at all: check for an on/off switch or a leftover plug, then charge it for 20–30 minutes.
- Blinking when you inhale: almost always low battery. Charge it.
- Lights up but no vapor: clear the mouthpiece, reseat the pod, and check the e-liquid gauge.
- Burnt taste: rest it 5–10 minutes, switch out of boost mode, and take shorter puffs.
- Foger showing "188": the dock can't read the pod. Clean the contacts and reseat it.
- Still dead after all that: contact us within 48 hours of delivery and we'll make it right.

Quick diagnosis: find your symptom
| Symptom | Most likely cause | First fix to try |
|---|---|---|
| No light, no vapor (brand new) | Low battery from shipping, or device switched off or locked | Check for an on/off or mode switch, then charge for 30 minutes |
| Light blinks when you inhale | Low battery, or a protection cutoff (puff too long, overheat, short) | Charge it. If it still blinks on a full charge, rest it for 10 minutes |
| Lights up but no vapor | Clogged airflow, pod not seated, or the device is empty | Clear the mouthpiece, reseat the pod, and check the e-liquid gauge |
| Burnt or harsh taste | Dry wick from chain vaping, a boost mode, or the device running empty | Wait 5–10 minutes, switch to normal mode, take shorter puffs |
| Hard to pull or gurgling | Condensation or e-liquid in the airway | Tap it mouthpiece-down onto a paper towel, then take short draws |
| Won't charge | Bad cable, lint in the port, or the wrong power source | Swap the cable and adapter, then clear the port gently |
| Fires on its own or gets hot | Faulty sensor or e-liquid on the electronics | Unplug it, set it on a non-flammable surface, and stop using it |
| Screen shows "188" (Foger) | The dock can't read the pod | Clean the contacts, reseat the pod, and charge the dock |
Why is my brand new disposable vape not working?
A new device that does nothing on the first pull usually has one of these problems. Work through them in order, because the first two cover most cases.
1. It's switched off, locked, or still packed
Many 2026 disposables are no longer purely "inhale to fire." The Geek Bar Pulse 15000 has a bottom slide switch with an off ("Close") position. The Oxbar Nic Switch uses a bottom ON/OFF switch that doubles as the airflow control. Either one left in the off position looks exactly like a dead device.
Also remove every sticker, rubber plug and silicone cap from both the mouthpiece and the bottom air intake. A missed plug is the most common "dud" that isn't actually a dud.
2. The battery shipped low
Disposables can sit in a warehouse or a hot truck for weeks, and a battery can drain in transit. Plug it in with a USB-C cable for 20–30 minutes and try again. If the light or screen reacts to the charger, the device works and just needed power.
3. You're covering the airflow
Air enters through small slots, usually on the bottom or the sides. Holding the device with your fingertips over the intake starves the draw sensor, and the device won't fire. Shift your grip and try again.
4. Condensation in the airway
Temperature swings during shipping can leave droplets in the airflow channel. That makes the draw feel tight or gurgly and can stop the sensor from triggering. Fixes are below under not hitting.
5. It's genuinely defective
If you get no light and no reaction on the charger, and nothing changes after 30 minutes on a known-good cable, the device is dead on arrival. Don't keep pulling on it or try to open it. Jump to what to do with a defective vape.
Disposable vape blinking? What the lights mean

Light codes are not universal, so check the manual that came in your box. The general patterns hold across most brands:
- A few blinks when you inhale, then nothing: low battery. This is by far the most common reason a vape is blinking. Charge it.
- Rapid blinking (often around 10 flashes): usually a protection cutoff. Common triggers are a puff held too long, the device getting too warm, or the chip detecting a short. Stop, let it rest for 10 minutes, and try short puffs. If it does this on a full charge every time, it's faulty.
- Blinking while plugged in: normally just the charging indicator. It should go solid or switch off when the battery is full.
- Blinking on a brand-new device, even after charging: treat it as a defect and contact the seller.
The Geek Bar Pulse also cuts off and blinks red if you take an extremely long puff. That's an overheat protection, not a failure.
Why is my vape lighting up but not hitting?
When the light comes on, the battery and sensor are working. The problem is between the coil and your mouth. Try these in order:
- Check the e-liquid gauge. Screen devices show juice level next to battery level. If the juice reads zero, the device is finished, even if the battery is full.
- Clear the mouthpiece. Wipe the tip with a paper towel. Hold the device mouthpiece-down over a towel and give it a few firm taps against your palm to shake out droplets.
- Take two or three short, sharp draws instead of one long one. This clears a light clog. Don't blow into the device, because that pushes e-liquid onto the battery and sensor.
- Reseat the pod on pod-and-dock devices like the RAZ Vue kit and Foger Switch Pro. Pull the pod, wipe the gold contacts on both parts with a dry cloth, and click it back in firmly.
- Drop out of boost mode and open the airflow fully if your device has a slider, like the OXBAR Astro Maze 50K.
Why does my new disposable vape taste burnt?
A burnt taste means the coil fired while the wick around it wasn't saturated. On a brand-new device that's almost always temporary. On a device you've used for a week, it usually means it's nearly empty.
- Chain vaping. Back-to-back puffs burn off e-liquid faster than the wick can reabsorb it. Space your puffs out. If it already tastes burnt, set it down for 5–10 minutes.
- Boost, Pulse or Turbo modes. High-power modes run hotter and dry the wick faster. If your Geek Bar Pulse X, Lost Mary MT35000 Turbo or Astro Maze tastes harsh, switch back to normal mode. Normal mode also gets you the full rated puff count: the Pulse X 2 is rated for 50,000 puffs in Regular mode.
- The first puff on a device that sat in the heat. Let a new device rest upright for 10 minutes at room temperature before the first hit.
- It's running empty. Once the e-liquid is gone, every puff burns dry cotton. No rest or setting fixes that. It's time for a new disposable.
Vape won't charge? Check these four things

Every rechargeable disposable we stock charges over USB-C. If nothing happens when you plug it in:
- Swap the cable. Charge-only and frayed cables fail all the time. Test with the same cable that charges your phone.
- Swap the power source. Try a standard USB wall adapter or a laptop port. If a high-wattage phone fast charger isn't working, a basic adapter often will.
- Check the port. Pocket lint packs into USB-C ports. With the device unplugged, look inside with a light and gently clear it with a dry, soft brush. Don't use metal, liquids or anything sharp.
- Give it time. A deeply drained battery may show nothing for the first few minutes. Leave it for 15 minutes before deciding it's dead.
How long to charge a disposable vape: most of today's devices reach full charge in about 30–90 minutes. Geek Bar says the Pulse X reaches 80% in 20 minutes. You don't have to wait for 100% to use it.
Lithium battery safety
Stop using any device that is swollen, hot to the touch, hissing, or leaking. Don't charge vapes unattended or overnight, and charge them on a hard, non-flammable surface rather than a bed or couch. Keep disposables out of hot cars. Recycle dead devices at a battery drop-off; don't put them in the trash.
Disposable vape auto-firing
If your vape fires, crackles or heats up without you inhaling, unplug it right away. Set it down on a non-flammable surface away from anything that can burn, and stop using it.
Auto-firing usually means e-liquid has reached the draw sensor or the sensor itself has failed. No safe home fix exists, so don't recharge it to "see if it clears." If it happens within the defect window, report it with a video.
Brand-specific fixes for popular disposables
Oxbar Nic Switch 35K
Our best seller has a bottom ON/OFF switch that also sets airflow. If yours won't fire, make sure it's in the on position. The screen shows battery plus your current nicotine and flavor settings. If the hit suddenly feels weaker, check whether one of the side buttons got bumped to a lower setting in your pocket.

OXBAR Astro Maze 50K
The button by the screen cycles through five power levels, and "Boost" shows on screen at the higher levels. Burnt or fast-draining? Drop the level. Weak? Check that the airflow slider on the bottom is open.

Geek Bar Pulse X 2 50K, Pulse X 25K and Pulse 15000
All three have a Regular mode and a Pulse mode. Pulse mode delivers a bigger hit but drains both the battery and the e-liquid faster, and it's the first thing to switch off when you're getting a burnt taste. On the Pulse 15000, the slide switch has an off position. If it seems frozen, slide it to off, wait 5–10 seconds, and switch it back on.

RAZ Vue (kit and pods)
The RAZ Vue is a pod that clicks onto a rechargeable base. If the base lights up but you get no vapor, the pod isn't making contact. Remove it, wipe both sets of contacts, and click it back in. The pod can be vaped on its own, and the screen percentage shows the base's battery, not the pod's. When a pod runs dry, you only replace the RAZ Vue pod and keep the base. Our RAZ Vue review covers charging and pod life in detail.
Foger Switch Pro 30K: "188," "000" and the green lightning bolt
Searches for "Foger vape not hitting" are almost always about the screen. Here's what it's telling you:
- "188": the dock can't read the pod. Clean the contacts, reseat the pod, try another pod, and charge the dock above 20%. A dock below about 10% can also trigger it.
- "000": the pod is empty or at end of life. Swap in a fresh Foger Switch Pro pod.
- Green lightning bolt: normal charging when plugged in. Blinking green with no cable attached is a low-battery warning.
Foger docks only work with genuine Switch Pro pods. A non-compatible or counterfeit pod won't fire at all.

Lost Mary MT35000 Turbo
The display only lights up while you're using it, so a dark screen at rest is normal. Turbo mode trades puff count for intensity (about 35,000 puffs in Smooth mode vs. roughly 20,000 in Turbo). Switch back to Smooth if the taste turns harsh.
Shop the Lost Mary MT35000 Turbo →
SEA XS
The SEA XS has no buttons or modes, so there's nothing to set wrong. If it isn't producing vapor, charge it and take smaller puffs. If it leaks, stand it upright for five minutes before using it again.
How long do disposable vapes last?
Puff counts are manufacturer ratings, based on short, even puffs in the lowest power mode. Longer draws and boost modes use e-liquid faster, so a device run mostly in Pulse or Boost mode will finish sooner than one run in normal mode. When the e-liquid gauge hits empty, or every hit tastes burnt even after resting, the device is done. The battery isn't the problem.

Frequently asked questions
How do I turn on a disposable vape?
Most disposables turn on when you inhale; there's no power button. If nothing happens, check for an on/off or mode switch (common on Geek Bar Pulse and Oxbar models), remove any plugs or stickers, and charge it for 20–30 minutes.
Why is my disposable vape blinking?
A few blinks when you inhale almost always means low battery, so charge it. Rapid blinking, often around 10 flashes, is usually a safety cutoff from a long puff or overheating. Let it rest. If a brand-new, fully charged device keeps blinking, it's defective.
Why does my new disposable vape taste burnt?
The wick hasn't fully saturated, usually from chain vaping, a boost mode, or heat exposure during shipping. Rest it upright for 5–10 minutes, switch to normal mode, and take shorter puffs. If a used device tastes burnt every time, it's empty.
Why is my vape lighting up but not hitting?
The battery works, but vapor isn't getting through. Usual causes are a clogged airway, an unseated pod, closed airflow, or no e-liquid left. Clear the mouthpiece, reseat the pod and check the juice gauge.
What does 188 mean on a Foger vape?
"188" means the dock can't read the pod. Clean the gold contacts on the pod and dock, reseat the pod firmly, and charge the dock above 20%. If it still shows 188, try a different genuine Foger Switch Pro pod.
How long does it take to charge a disposable vape?
Most rechargeable disposables fully charge in about 30–90 minutes over USB-C. Many can be used after 15–20 minutes of charging.
How long do disposable vapes last?
It depends on the puff rating and how you vape. Puff counts are manufacturer ratings, and long draws or boost modes will finish a device sooner than normal mode.
Is an auto-firing vape dangerous?
Treat it as a safety issue. Unplug it, set it on a non-flammable surface, and stop using it. Don't try to repair it or keep charging it.
The bottom line
Most "dead" disposables aren't dead. Check the switch and plugs, charge it, clear the airflow, and drop out of boost mode, and you'll fix the vast majority of problems in a few minutes. If a device from SmokTek is genuinely defective, contact us within 48 hours and we'll take care of it.
